Best tap and die set of 2021

A tool kit always comes in handy for a handyman who repairs cars and appliances, especially if the kit is a thread cutter. To cut a damaged thread on a bolt or to make with your own hands the necessary screw and nut instead of the lost ones, if you have the best tap and die set on hand, will not make much trouble and will save you from having to search for the necessary part.

A little history

Fasteners, analogs of modern screws, have been known to mankind since the beginning of our era. Jewelers of Ancient Rome used them in the manufacture of jewelry, and craftsmen used them to make medical instruments. Making fasteners was expensive in those days and was not widely used. The XV century came. On the battlefields faced warriors in armor and armor, parts of which were fastened with screws and pins. At the same time, watchmakers assembled their products with screws. Nuts, on the other hand, appeared later, about a hundred and fifty years later. There were no generally accepted standards then. Each craftsman made fasteners as he saw fit. In the XVII century, there were close to modern connections, and the thread pitch was an inch.

«Metric thread was first used in France more recently, in the 19th century».

How to choose a set of dies and taps

First, let’s note the key parameters of selecting taps with dies to understand the characteristics specified for the product.

Steel grade

Sets for threading are made of high-carbon steel, which is characterized by increased strength but is capable of rusting. If you choose a product made of alloyed alloys, it will resist corrosion better, but then you need to choose its hardness correctly. Values of 40-55 HRC are sufficient to restore the thread, but as a tool for primary processing is not suitable. Taps and dies with a hardness level of 60 HRC and more can be called professional tools that can be used not only to correct an old thread but also to make a stud or bolt from a rod.

Measuring system

Taps and shanks of taps indicate their size, which can be in inches or millimeters. These are not the same, as the teeth of the two systems do not match. If you regularly need to cut bolts for American autoblocks or other imported devices, choose kits with the inch system. In all other cases, metric dies will be easier to use.

Number of Pieces

You can get anywhere from 20 to 110 threading tools in a set. The more items, the wider the possibilities of the product (multiple pitch variations with the same diameter, rare diameters). Evaluate how often you will need the maximum sizes from the set to see if it is worth paying for the larger set. Usually, M3 to M12 are in every kit, but M12 and over are rarer and more expensive.

Number of starts

If it is a set for primary metal processing, it will necessarily have some of the same diameters of taps and dies that have different approach angles and crest height (they are marked with stripes on the shank by numbers). Such intermediate values are needed for easier work. There can be 2 or 3 stars. The first option will build cheaper, but it is harder to work with. The second is more expensive but much easier to manipulate.

For what kind of holes

To thread a through-hole, taps with a sharply tapered shape are used, making it easier to start working. But when it comes to a blind hole, the protruding tip taps and makes it impossible to thread all the way through. In such cases, taps with a blunt end are used (has a cylindrical rather than conical shape). There is also a tool for tapping threads on or in pipes. It is designated as NPT 1/4 or ⅛ inch. If you have to work with such workpieces, pay attention to the cutting tool with the specific designation.

Holder Type

A collar-type holder is provided to hold the taps. When threads are run in a place where it is difficult to stick such a large tool, a T-shaped holder, which is compact, will do. Look for kits with this equipment if you often fix threads in-car assemblies without removing the large part from the outside.

Side of rotation

Most kits are designed for right-hand threading, common around the world. If you need to do auto hub studs or propane fittings that use left-hand threads, buy the proper tool.

Classification of threads Metric.

  • The most common fastener thread. The diameter of the parts is measured in mm.
  • Pipe thread. Used when installing pipelines and stop and control valves (mixers, taps, valves). Diameter is measured in inches and fractions of an inch, so it is also called inch.
  • Threads on the outer surface of parts: bolts, studs, pipes, called the outer, and the nuts, blind sockets, and couplings – the internal.
  • According to the direction of rotation, a distinction is made between left and right.
  • According to the number of stars – one and many starts.
  • The cross-section is triangular, rectangular trapezoidal, etc. Can be straight (cylindrical) or conical.

Threading methods

There are 5 common ways to thread well:

  1. Using a lathe – tapping with a die, tap, or chisel.
  2. Threading with the help of special rollers, a flat die, or a tap.
  3. Grinding with a single- or multi-strand wheel is used in the manufacture of running screws.
  4. Threads on parts made of plastic or non-ferrous metal are pressed out.
  5. Electrical discharge machining of parts is used for brittle and very hard materials (ceramics).

a Tap and Die Set??

How to choose the best tap and die set

Before you buy a set, you should decide on the type and diameter of tools, which of them are most in-demand, and what you should pay attention to:

  • The best set when installing plumbing in the cottage, will be pipe dies with a diameter: 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”, 1 1/4”, 1 1/5” and 2”. A ratchet claw in the kit will ease the installation process;
  • to fix damaged parts, a set with hand taps and hand taps of different sizes will come in handy. Popular diameters range from M3 to M12;
  • for roughing or finishing parts, it is better to select tap sets with different numbers (the number marking is located on the tail of the annular groove);
  • roughing taps have a truncated cone and a mark – 1 ring, and finishing taps have a triangular profile – with 3 rings (there are also medium with a mark of 2 rings);
  • Pay attention to the equipment in the set, as there may be items with a repeating number, and the needful may not be at the most inopportune time;

  • drills are finished products made of high-carbon steel and thread the parts in 1 pass;
  • taps are made of marked high-speed steel and alloy steel. Markings of carbide material can be seen on the surface of the taps.
  • it is better to buy a tool in a carrying case for easy storage or carrying. The purchase will not be cheap if the set contains a large number of items. There are no 100% threading kits, so you will have to buy more items by the piece anyway.
  • Kits are divided into professional and household. The high price for professional kits guarantees their durability and wear resistance. Household kits should be purchased for small amounts of work in a cottage or apartment.
  • Note that the threading set should have a thread gauge. It can be used to determine the profile and pitch of parts.

What parameters distinguish threads

Let’s look at the characteristics of metric and pipe threads. One of the main parameters of the thread is its pitch.

  1. In metric threads, it is the distance in mm. between the same sides of two consecutive threads. In pipe and inch threads it is the number of turns per inch.
  2. A distinction is made between outer, middle, and inner diameters. Outer is the distance between the tops of the teeth on opposite sides of the part. Internal is the same distance between the hollows of the coils. The average is measured at two opposite points of the middle part of the profile.
  3. The stroke is the distance by which the point on the single turn screw will move, having made a complete revolution on the surface of the part. In a single turn, it is equal to the pitch; in a multi-turn, it is equal to the product of the pitch by the number of turns.

We will not consider the other parameters, as they are mainly needed for calculations. The diameter of metric threads can be measured with a caliper. To determine the parameters of pipe threads, the results of measurement with a caliper are checked against the data of a special table. However, an experienced specialist can determine the diameter of pipe threads in inches by eye. In any case, in the range from 3/8 to 2 inches, it is not difficult.

Metric thread

Widely used in fasteners: screws, bolts and nuts, studs, etc.

Metric threads can be tapered or cylindrical, depending on the shape (cross-section) of the machined surface. In both cases, the profile (tooth) angle is 60°.

Pipe thread

Manufactured according to BSP (British Standard pipe thread). The profile has a 55° angle. The pitch is measured by the number of turns per inch of length (25.4 mm). Marked P 11, means that in one inch there are eleven turns. P 14 is fourteen turns per 25.4 mm, etc. There are also P 19 and 28 (a total of four pitches) Pipe threads are designated by the letter G and a number which denotes the size of the passage section of the pipe without taking into account the thickness of its walls. This value is called the nominal diameter of the pipe. It is measured in whole or fractional inches.

A and B accuracy classes are differentiated. The designation G 1/2-A LH stands for 3/4″, accuracy class A, left-hand. Products are often marked simply, e.g. 3/4″ – three-quarter inch. It should be remembered that this case refers to the diameter of the nominal passage of the pipe connection. To obtain the outside diameter, you must add twice the wall thickness of the pipe to the nominal diameter.

How to make a carving

The following methods are used:

  1. Cutting with a die, tap, cutters on lathes, cutters, special threaded heads, restoration of damaged screws with files.
  2. Threading with special rollers or flat tap, tapeless tap.
  3. Grinding with a single or multi-strand wheel. This method is used in the manufacture of travel screws.
  4. Pressing out on parts of plastics and non-ferrous metal.
  5. This method is not particularly precise and is used in the processing of products made of plastic and non-ferrous metal.
  6. Fragile and very hard materials: ceramics or carbide parts are subjected to electro-erosion machining.

The die

It is a hardened steel nut with cutting edges. The part is cut with it in one pass. The chips are removed through the holes between the cutting edges. The work can be done manually by clamping it in a lacquer/platen holder, or on a machine. Usually dies are made 8 to 10 turns thick. The working part is a cone with two to three turns of the feed part. Alloy or high-speed steel is used as a material for making dies: 9ÕÑ, Ð6Ì5, etc. Product marking indicates the degree of accuracy, diameter, and steel grade of the product. If you bought a strip, on the surface on which there is no mark of steel, know that it is 9ÕÑ steel.

The die comes in the slit, sliding (for clips), round, hexagonal, etc.

The most precise work is done with one-piece dies. They are also the fastest wearing ones.

Special screw with cutting edges. It is screwed into the workpiece, rotated, and cuts the surface of the workpiece. The chips are removed through special grooves between the working edges. The tail part is clamped in a holder before the operation. The active part is divided into a lead cutter and a gauge cutter. The best quality result is obtained by running the hole alternately with roughing, medium, and finishing taps. They are easily distinguished by profile and marking rings on shanks. A distinction is made between machine and hand tools for nuts and blind sockets. Their shanks are shaped differently.

Rolling tools are used for rolling. They do not have grooves.

Taps are made of hard alloys and high-speed steel. Before starting work, the workpiece to be machined is lubricated with any fat grease. Working without grease is not recommended. You will not get a quality piece.

Best tap and die set selection criteria

Before you buy a set, you should decide on the type and diameter of tools, which of them are most in-demand, and what you should pay your attention to:

  • If you plan to install plumbing in a country house, you need to buy a ratchet clevis and pipe tongs. The most suitable for this type of work will be dies of diameter 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”, 1 1/4”, 1 1/5” and 2”. A ratchet die will make the job easier.
  • Various sizes of lancers and hand taps will be needed to repair damaged parts or cut new ones. Diameters from M3 to M12 are considered the most popular.
  • It is better to select taps of each diameter in sets of two or three numbers, for roughing, medium and finishing. Different numbers are marked by the application of annular grooves on the tail part. Roughing is marked with one ring, medium roughing with two rings, and finishing with three rings. Roughing has a truncated cone profile, while finishing has a triangular profile.
  • Buying sets should be carefully examined. You may be handed two products with the same profile: both rough or two finish.

  • Lerks, as a rule, cut a part in one pass, so they are all finishing. They are made of high carbon steel. 6. Taps are most commonly made of carbide. The steel grade is marked on the surface of the dies. This can be high-speed steel or alloy steel.
  • t is better to buy tools in convenient cases made of plastic or metal. It is more convenient to carry and store it than a “loose” one.
  • However, buying “scattered” is impossible to avoid. One hundred percent universal “cases” does not exist.
  • Sets differ in the number of items. The more there are, the more expensive the purchase will be.
  • There are professional and household tools. Professional ones are of high quality, better wear resistance and higher price.
  • To determine the profile and pitch, there should be a thread gauge in the case.
    When buying, you should carefully inspect the tool, especially the condition of the cutting edges. Even a beginner will be able to distinguish quality products from a cheap fake.

Virtually all of the threading sets in our rating list are suitable for both professional and domestic use. When buying, you should carefully inspect the taps and dies to avoid buying a low-quality knockoff of well-known brands. Specialists will determine by eye whether it is worth buying a particular set. For those who are not very knowledgeable in this matter, it is worth asking the advice of craftsmen. We hope that our review will tell you how to choose a decent set at a reasonable price and help you avoid mistakes when choosing threading tool kits.
