The main purpose of a drill is to drill holes in various kinds of materials. An ordinary drill can easily cope with metal, wood, drywall, and other not particularly dense surfaces. An impact drill can easily drill through concrete, stone, and brick. Special-purpose devices can replace a screwdriver and a construction mixer, and with special attachments, the drill can be used to grind surfaces.
An impact drill can replace a hammer drill because, in addition to rotating, it also has a percussive force. That is why you can easily make a hole in concrete with it. On the other hand, if you are going to work mainly with concrete and other dense materials, it is better to take a hammer drill – it is designed for constant loads of this kind and will last longer. In other respects, the paths of the hammer drill and the impact drill are different. The design of these devices is fundamentally different, so the hammer under the force of many processes that require high power. It is used for cutting through walls, chipping tiles, breaking off bricks. The main function of a rotary hammer is to chisel, while the drill’s function is to drill.
The difference between a drill and a screwdriver can easily be found by someone who knows little about repair work at all. If the drill drills holes, the screwdriver is needed to tighten and unscrew screws and bolts. The speed of rotation of the screwdriver chuck is much lower, and this tool has fewer settings. The power of professional models, as a rule, is higher than 800-1000 watts. With power increases and the weight of the device, so to take a drill with a large margin on this parameter makes no sense – the hands will be very tired when working. On the contrary, if you take a model with insufficient power, your hands will be tired from the fact that when drilling will have to apply additional load.
If you have to work with materials not stronger than bricks, you can stop at a drill with a power of 800 watts. If you plan to drill concrete or constantly use the drill as a construction mixer, you will need a more powerful model.
SHAFT SPEED AND ITS ADJUSTMENT
The no-load speed of the drill shaft can be up to 3,500 rpm, but this speed is not always necessary. The higher this parameter, the faster it will be possible to drill the hole and the smoother its walls will be. High RPM is more necessary to grind and polish the surface, but it will also be useful for percussive works. To screw in a screw, 400-500 revolutions per minute will be enough.
